Watermelon Meat Extraction Tool and Method
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to an apparatus and a method for
extracting fruit. More specifically, the present invention is an apparatus and a method
that allows an individual to separate a watermelon’s meat from the rind, allowing for
perfect extraction of the watermelon’s meat.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Watermelon is a savory fruit that is enjoyed by many individuals. Watermelon is
not only enjoyable to eat but is also an aesthetic pleasing fruit when separated from the
watermelon’s shell. Watermelon meat can be used to make various shapes and designs.
However, extracting the watermelon meat from a shell is a delicate process that most
individuals have difficulty with. It is therefore an object of the present invention to
provide an apparatus and a method to extract the watermelon’s meat easily from the
watermelon’s shell and to serve the watermelon in an aesthetic way without the shell.

DETAIL DESCRIPTIONS OF THE INVENTION
All illustrations of the drawings are for the purpose of describing selected
versions of the present invention and are not intended to limit the scope of the present
invention.
The present invention is designed for extracting watermelon meat easily from the
shell and serving the watermelon in an aesthetic way without the shell. The present
invention is a tool and a method that is universal for all sizes and natural shapes of
watermelon.
In the present invention, the tool is comprised of a blade and a handle. The blade
has a special design and is attached to the handle. In the preferred embodiment, the blade
is made from a hard material and has low elasticity. The blade’s width should be limited
for maneuvering purposes but different embodiments are acceptable. The blade is
sharpened on both edges for better maneuvering as well as being usable to both right and
left handed users. The blade is designed with a vertical (short) portion and a horizontal
(long) portion. Both portions are curved by a radius which is equal to the average
watermelon’s meat portion’s radius (R). The horizontal portion’s arc cord approximately
is equal ~R, and vertical portion’s arc cord approximately is equal ~ 0.5R. In the
preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is a fillet between horizontal and
vertical portions.
In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, a watermelon must be first
divided into two approximately equal portions by a plane perpendicular to longest axis of
the watermelon; the tool then should be used to extract the meat. The tool with one of the
edges must be inserted into the watermelon meat at a little angle at the edge of the rind
(where the white and red meet) and at the same time gradually brought to a vertical
position by moving the tool deeply until all short and long portions of the blade are into
the watermelon meat. Then keeping the short portion of the blade parallel to the
watermelon’s shell and cutting the 360 degree circumference from the insertion point, a
layer will be cut from the meat. Using a fork, a cut layer can be extracted out from the
shell. A bottom layer can be cut the same way, only this time the blade’s long portion
must be kept parallel to the shell and part of the short portion may be out of the meat.
Depending on a watermelon’s shape and size there can be more than two layers of meat.
The layers can be cut to small pieces for serving.
Although the invention has been explained in relation to its preferred
embodiment, it is to be understood that many other possible modifications and variations
can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as herein
described.
