Musical instrument of the type called “ocean drum” provided with three or more vibratile membranes, in the interspaces of which some balls of different materials and diameters, phosphorescent as well, are inserted. By tilting said drum, provided with two or more planes bearing some balls, the latter roll on the internal surface of the membranes produces sounds that evoke sea waves. Said “ocean drum” has a plurality of rings with a common central axis, aligned in a fixed way to enable the insertion of three or more vibratile membranes between them. Said rings are made of laminated plywood, solid wood or plastic material. They are glued, without discontinuity, to the circular membranes made of animal leather, or of polymer films provided with holes on a median diameter of the rings for more resistant gluing.
This instrument commercially called the Theta Drum has, compared to traditional Ocean drums, a more beautiful and nuanced sound that is more modulable by the performer, musically interesting and able to evoke the sound of sea waves more effectively and emotionally engaging.
This is made possible by the fact that the sound produced by the spheres is richer in serious frequencies as the diameter and specific weight increase. Being able to have two sounds instead of one makes it possible to decide between different sound pairings to produce instruments that are structurally identical but have different and very interesting sound characteristics.
The visible and simultaneous movement of the two orders of spheres enhances the use of the instrument in music therapy settings, meditation and musical activities with children since the visual aspect related to the movement of the spheres is of particular importance.
It is also possible to insert phosphorescent plastic spheres inside the instrument that, when used in the dark, enhance its visual qualities.
Another purpose of this utility model is to allow the construction of frame drums equipped with any number of membranes.
A further purpose of this utility model is to provide a more manageable instrument especially for children as the method of construction allows the total thickness of the drum to be contained.
Still another purpose of this utility model is to provide a way of producing an Ocean drum type frame drum that is simple and inexpensive to produce.
