METHOD FOR TREATING ANAL PRURITIS AND OTHER PERIANAL DISORDERS

The invention relates to methods and compositions for the treatment of pruritis ani and other perianal disorders. There are currently few treatments for these conditions, many of which have significant side effects. The methods of the invention involve the administration of a cream or lotion of pregabalin, an anti-epileptic agent that has pain-relieving properties. This topical form of pregabalin may also include the addition of other agents such as immunomodulators, antibiotics, or agents that enhance wound healing. This method may be useful as a new and safe treatment for pruritis ani, skin conditions, and other anorectal disorders. Previous positive clinical experience suggests that this new treatment is promising for these disorders.
The prevalence of pruritis ani and other perianal diseases is currently unknown, but it is expected in total that these conditions are relatively common (affecting more than 2% of the US population). On the other hand, individual perianal diseases are rare, and many of these fall under the category of orphan illnesses.
Oral pregabalin is a very frequently prescribed medication. The global market for Lyrica (the branded form of pregabalin) was valued at USD 797 million in 2018.
