PASSIVE MEASURING AIR PARAMETERS AND THE VELOCITY OF WHEELS

A passive gauge for measuring air parameters in tyres and the angular velocity of the wheels of a vehicle comprises, on a wheel or tyre, structural elements that generate magnetic fields; pressure and temperature sensors that generate magnetic fields as the wheel rotates in an external magnetic field, the magnetic fields generated by said sensors depending on the air pressure and temperature, respectively; a signal generator mounted in proximity to the wheel and generating an external magnetic field, and also generating an electrical voltage in response to the effect of a magnetic field of the structural elements, said electrical voltage being used to power passive assemblies of the gauge and to determine the angular velocity, the signal generator further generating electrical signals in response to the effect of the magnetic fields of the sensors, said electrical signals being used to determine the air parameters; a passive wireless data transmission assembly electrically coupled to the signal generator, said assembly identifying air parameter and angular velocity data and transmitting said data to a wireless data display assembly via an audio channel, or a passive wired data display assembly which forms an electrical circuit with the signal generator.
Compared to known tire pressure and temperature monitoring devices with direct measurements, the passive meter has advantages, such as:
1. The passive meter does not need a power supply;
2. There are no radio transmitters, pressure or temperature sensors, or moving mechanical parts on the wheel or tire;
3. inductive transmission of electrical signals and voltages from the wheel or tire to the signal generator, eliminating the use of electromagnetic waves;
4. Simple design, small size and weight of components, low cost;
5 The possibility of using a passive meter on wheels with tubeless and tubeless tires;
6. The possibility to measure angular velocity of wheels by a passive meter can lead to refusal of other devices for measuring angular velocity on a vehicle, for example, ABS system consisting of a toothed rotor and wheel angular velocity sensor (Fig. 5), which will lead to reduction of price of ABS system, to improvement of its reliability.
7. Possibility of using a wired connection between the signal generator and
information display unit, which eliminates many of the problems encountered in wireless communication;
8. The ability to use sound waves to transmit information wirelessly from the signal generator to the information display node, eliminating many of the problems encountered in using electromagnetic waves for this purpose;
9. The low cost of a passive meter, especially for truck trains with many wheels;
10. No need to "prescribe" pressure (temperature) sensors after tire service, as signals to the information display unit transmits a signal generator installed on the mudguard, not on the wheel;
11. Ability to use without "registration" any number of sets of wheels with installed sensors of pressure (temperature).

6. ESTIMATE OF ECONOMIC BENEFIT
A preliminary assessment of the economic benefits of promoting a passive meter to the market was carried out using average retail prices for the components of a passive meter, taken from various sites posted on the Internet, as of May 2023.
The price of a passive meter needs to be justified when carrying out design work on the development of working documentation for the product.
Approximate retail price of purchased products for the production of a pressure sensor:
1. Copper washer 8.0x15.0x1.0 mm, weight 0.2 g, price ~ $ 0.06;
2. Resistive pressure sensor with a diameter of ~ 15 mm, weight ~ 7 g, price ~ $ 1.5.
The total price of the pressure sensor will be ~ $ 1.56.

Approximate retail price of purchased products for the production of a temperature sensor:
1. Copper washer 8.0x15.0x1.0 mm, weight 0.2 g, price ~ $ 0.06;
2. Thermistor with a diameter of ~ 11 mm, weight ~ 1 g, price ~ $ 0.4.
The total price of the temperature sensor will be ~ $ 0.46.
The signal generator consists of a bracket on which a permanent magnet is mounted, and an inductor is mounted on the permanent magnet.
You can use a ferrite cylindrical permanent magnet with a diameter of ~16 mm, a height of ~6 mm; at ~ $0.13.
You can use a neodymium cylindrical permanent magnet with a diameter of ~10 mm, a height of ~4 mm; at ~ $0.63.
It is better to make the inductor on your own, the price of the inductor will be ~ $ 0.75.
The price of a steel bracket will be ~ $ 0.25.
The total price of the signal generator will be ~ $ 1.13 - $ 1.63.

In the case of wireless transmission of data on pressure and air temperature in the tire, in addition to the signal generator, a wireless information transmission unit, for example, a piezo emitter, is installed.
It is better to make a wireless information transmission node and an information display unit for a passive meter on your own.
Approximately, as the price of a wireless information transmission node, we will take the retail price of a piezo emitter ~ $ 7.5.

For a four-wheeled vehicle, the price of a passive meter with a wired information transmission node will be ~ $ 22, and with a wireless information transmission node

The price of TPMS varies from ~$37.5 to ~$375, depending on the manufacturer of the monitoring system.

Given the many other advantages of a passive system over a TPMS system, it can be considered that installing a passive system in a vehicle is preferable to installing a TPMS system.

A manufacturer's profit can be between $15 and $200 per passive system kit produced and sold.

Assuming that a passive tire air and wheel speed meter will output the measured values of the wheel speeds to the ABS system, there is no need to use a gear rotor and an ABS wheel speed sensor.
The average price of a gear rotor is ~ 20 $, and a wheel speed sensor is ~ 12 $.
Therefore, the price of an ABS system for a four-wheeler will decrease by ~$128.
The profit of a passive meter manufacturer by simplifying the ABS system can be between ~$47 and ~$328 per passive system kit produced and sold.

When organizing the production of a passive measuring device for air parameters in tires and angular speeds of wheels, such components of the product as copper washers, resistive pressure sensors, thermistors, permanent magnets are best purchased in bulk at a price two to three times less than the retail price.
Production of a signal generator (expected cost ~ $ 0.6), a piezoelectric emitter (expected cost ~ $ 5) and an information display unit (expected cost
~ $ 5) can be adjusted on their own.
