Multipurpose Residential Laundry Cart

[Category : - OTHER]
[Viewed 454 times]

Overview

Market research has shown that residents of college dormitories, elder care facilities, small homes, apartments, high rise apartments, condos, and townhouses are often faced with a need to transport laundry some distances inside and/or outside of their facilities to laundry rooms or commercial laundromats. Part of the process is collecting soiled clothing from hampers and/or several rooms. Transport usually involves physically carrying full laundry baskets the required distance or utilizing available single purpose laundry carts that tend to be light duty or have limited utility and durability all things considered, few if any are suitable for transport outdoors. Space constraints within a small residences comes into play.

Multi-purpose Laundry Cart Solution

The solution is a multi-purpose laundry cart with greater utility and capacity that can be used as both a hamper and dresser, and provide for easy transport of full 1.5 bushel size laundry baskets both inside and outside of a residence, plus serve as a work surface for sorting and folding clothing during the washing and drying process.

Design

The cart is designed and sized to utilize up to three commonly available rectangular plastic laundry baskets in 1.5 bushel size stacked vertically. The cart can be used as a hamper for collecting soiled items, optionally as a dresser holding clean folded laundry in the baskets, or both by cycling the articles between the three baskets. Most importantly, the cart is designed to allow easy transport of loaded baskets while functioning like a utility hand cart or roll-on luggage eliminating the need to carry individual baskets that could weigh up to 40 pounds each with soiled or wet clothing. This allows easy transport inside a residence room to room, but the design also allows transport outside a residence to or from a vehicle or directly to a laundromat via city sidewalks. The partially hidden wheels are sized to allow easy rolling over carpet, hardwood, or tile while inside, and tile, concrete, asphalt, and even grass while outside. The unit is sized to fit into trunks or hatchbacks of many cars or SUV’s with or without two baskets installed in the unit, a third basket would have to be loaded into a vehicle separately.

The openings in the side and back of the unit provide for ventilation for clothing and prevent loss during transport. The solid surface shelves prevent any liquids draining directly into baskets below. The hand grab slots on the front and top allow the unit to be easily pushed or pulled from any approach angle. The small footprint of approximately 3.6 square feet allows the unit to be located inside a closet, corner of a room, or between furniture either sideways or facing forward. Unit width allows easy movement through standard door openings down to 28 inches. The location of the quiet rolling wheels protects them from being caught or snagged when the unit is moved and their weight capacity together far exceeds anticipated loads. The cart can be sold assembled or in kit form. The design has been tested, proven in actual use by customers, manufacturing methods have been refined.

Competing Concepts

There are competing concepts on the market but none combine the utility, durability, flexibility of ease of transport over all surfaces. The multipurpose laundry cart design is unique in that this single product addresses several needs. Patent infringement may occur.

Manufacturing

The multi-purpose laundry cart is designed to be produced from a single 4 x 8 foot sheet of commonly available materials such as 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick ABS plastic, various plywoods, and even some types of foam board. Individual parts are usually produced using a CNC router, or common wood working tools can be used. A variety of assembly methods are possible, gluing is common. Assembly strength is the result of engineering the sum of the parts for light weight and load carrying capacity. A wide variety of finishes and color combinations are possible.

Production

Before and after patent was issued numerous carts were produced and sold and the design evolved to a final state with 1/4 inch ABS sheet material proven to be the most popular and durable. The product is easily produced using CNC router to cut out the various parts and there are several final assembly methods possible for a manufacturer.

Financial information

Most popular material type in final design were produced in ABS plastic and sold online under tradename "Ultimate Laundry Cart." Profit easily covered development, production, legal, and patent application costs.

The market potential is large: Residents of college dormitories, elder care facilities, small homes, apartments, high rise apartments, condos, and townhouses. Market research shows easily 1 million or more USA residents would find this product useful.
