Fire-retardant and Intumescent Eco-friendly Paint

[Category : - Life-saving; Fire-fighting]
[Viewed 537 times]

Technology Overview
This technology consists of a fire-protection painting scheme, which is applied on metalwork and/or woodwork and includes two similar water-based coating formulations, one with an intumescent effect and the other with a fire-retardant effect, and uses renewable carbon sources obtained from Pinus radiata bark waste, offering a protection range from F-20 to F-40 according to ASTM D3806 (Figure 1).

Both coating formulations have the same main and complementary components. They differ in terms of the amount of high molecular weight tannins added and the ratio between ammonium phosphate dihydrate/polyol. Their main components are: pentaerythritol (polyol), high molecular weight tannin, ammonium phosphate dihydrate (FADH) and melamine; and the complementary components (fillers and pigments) are titanium dioxide, calcined kaolin (Burgess Iceberg), alumina, anionic dispersant, and an acrylic dispersant as a polymeric binder (Figure 2).

The painting scheme consists in applying a first layer of fire-retardant coating on bare metal previously degreased and/or sanded to remove the rust, or on wood previously sealed, and then apply two coats of intumescent coating and allow it to dry between coats.

The coats can be applied undiluted with either a brush or a roller, and be left to dry approximately 12 hours between coats. Coats can also be applied with automatic airless spray guns or conventional sprays with a dilution of 10 - 15% in water, and it is required to apply a greater number of coats, with a drying time of 4h between layers (at 23°C). After applying this painting scheme, it is recommended to use a top-coat finish to provide greater surface protection and durability, and easy cleaning and maintenance.

Benefits
- It provides dual staged fire protection, which reduces the number of coats applied in half, compared to commercial paints using both brush/roller and automatic spray guns.
- It has similar properties to commercial coatings. However, it generates less environmental damage, since it partly uses natural products (tannins) obtained from radiata pine bark waste, as a carbon source to replace polyol.
- The opacity and covering power of the coatings is increased without the need of toxic pigments

Applications
This painting scheme is intended for use to protect woodwork or metalwork against fire in commercial, housing and industrial buildings.

Opportunity
We are currently looking for potential licensees and/or commercial partners to bring this product to the global market and obtain the necessary registrations to allow this product to be used commercially.

We are also willing to cross-licensing agreements and generate synergies with circular economy solutions in the paint industry to replace polyol with natural and environmentally friendly components. There is even the possibility of generating co-development focused on the active paint industry for the construction industry, and/or co-development to improve both coating formulations for use in other applications.
