Biological bioremediation of complex pollutants

[Category : - OTHER]
[Viewed 657 times]

Technology Overview
The technology is a method for the treatment of industrial waste (sludge and water), groundwater and soils that uses only one strain of bacteria —Pseudomona aeruginosa CSMY-1— for the simultaneous bioremediation of different complex industrial pollutants.

Preliminary laboratory and pilot test results show that the contaminants removed by the bacterial strain include arsenic (As III), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), hydrocarbons, petroleum derivatives, Kraft lignin, textile dyes —Reactive Black (NR-5), Drimaren Red K4-BL (RD K4-BL), Cibacron Brilliant Yellow 3G-P (CBY 3G-P)— and phenols.

This methodology consists of adding and incubating the bacteria as a biofilm in a solid support in the contaminated environment for a period of 5 to 10 days, from 20ºC-40ºC, in a pH range from 4 to 11, to allow the removal of contaminants. For the removal of arsenic and heavy metals from groundwater, the strain could be used in pumping and treatment systems or be installed in a “bio-trench” (Figure 1,Figure 2,Figure 3)

It is worth mentioning that the strain is deposited under the registration RGM2262 in the Bank of Microbial Genetic Resources of Chile.

Benefits
- Low production costs because it uses only one bacteria strain for the simultaneous removal of various complex industrial waste (sludge and water) pollutants.
- Greater efficiency of As (III) removal compared to other reported strains, this being over 80% in 5 days using our technology, compared to a removal of 60% in 90 days when using other strains. Laboratory validated.
- Laboratory results show the removal of over 90% of different contaminating textile dyes after the second day, thus achieving results that are equivalent to conventional treatments (14 days) in 120 hours (5 days).
- Compliance of industrial waste containing complex pollutants with the Chilean sanitary regulations ranges (Decreto Supremo N°148), reducing final disposal costs up to four times.

Applications
This technology is intended for use in the removal of pollutants from the industrial waste (water and sludge) generated by the textile, cellulose (forestry), mining and oil industries. Another possible application is the removal of contaminants such as Cd, Zn, Pb and As (III) from groundwater.

Today this technology is licensed on a non-exclusive basis to a Chilean hazardous industrial waste treatment company, with whom we are working on upgrading. Among the results obtained is short-time pollutant removal, which allowed the company to comply with the Chilean environmental treatment and disposal regulations in the short run.

Opportunity
We are currently looking for potential licensees and/or co-developers to bring this product to the global market and obtain the necessary registrations for the product commercial use.

We are looking for a co-developer to:

- Parametrise the production scale of the strain in good manufacturing practice (GMP) facilities authorised by a regulatory agency, such as the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
- Evaluate the performance of the product in field trials (arsenic and other contaminants removal).
- Request the commercial registration of the developed product for commercialisation
