DYNAMIC PRESCRIPTION DISPENSING CHECKLIST SYSTEMS AND METHODS
[Category : - HEALTH]

Caregiving is difficult for many reasons. Managing medications should not be one of the biggest stressors for caregivers, but it was for me and my sister. We encountered so many obstacles with this that we invented the checklist system. Here are some challenges we faced and the solutions that we found once we invented the dynamice prescription dispensing checklist system:
Dosage - sometimes the dosage of the medication would change. This invention allowed us to erase and modify as necessary rather than making a new sheet every time something changed.
Drug added or removed - sometimes the patient needed to take a certain drug for two weeks and then off for two weeks and then take again for two weeks for a lengthy time frame. This invention allowed us to add or remove drug information as necessary.
Timing of medication - some drugs needed to be given two hours before a meal, or two hours after a meal. This invention allowed us to list all prescriptions at the various times they needed to be dispensed and allowed us to keep everything organized.
Checking it off - sometimes, while we were putting medications into a weekly holder, we would get interrupted and forget if we put the pills in or not. This invention gave us a space to check a box to indicate it had been put into the holder. We would then erase it for the next time we needed it.
Are we running low? - keeping track of how many pills remained, when one needed to call in a refill, what is the refill number etc. was time consuming and required someone to look at each medication bottle to find the refill number and pharmacy information. This invention allowed us to put all relevant information in one spot (pharmacy phone number, refill number etc.) of all medications.
Emergency visits to the hospital - many times during the patient´s sickness. we would have to quickly go to the emergency room for help. We wanted to be with our loved one and did not want to spend time at the registration desk going over the list of medications, so we would bring the checklist system with us and the nurse would make a photo copy, thereby immediately obtaining the most up-to-date medication information.
Overall, I would have to say that I am extremely proud of this system because it solves so many issues and it allows the caregivers and family members to spend less time managing the disease and more time giving care to the patient. Below is the official patent abstract.
A system includes a board comprising a first surface comprising an area identified for allowing a user to identify prescriptions, an area identified for allowing a user to identify times for taking the prescription, and an area identified for allowing a user to removably mark the board upon dispensing pills into a weekly or monthly pill organizer. A first plurality of strips movably and releasably is attachable to the first surface of the board in the area identified for labeling prescription medications. The first plurality of strips comprises a front surface operable for allowing a user to removably label prescription medications. A second plurality of strips is movably and releasably attachable to the first surface of the board in the area identified for labeling times for taking the prescription medications. The second plurality of strips comprising a front surface operable for allowing a user to removably label times for taking the prescription medications.
