TUNNEL DEVICE

[Category : - OTHER]
[Viewed 525 times]

Tunnel safety is the most vital feature to attend by all those who are engaged in road tunnel design, construction, operation, or safety to prevent tunnels from becoming deadly traps in the event of a crash. Many tunnels are old and not intended for today’s huge and growing traffic volumes, bringing to the fore the necessity of enhancing the level of safety in tunnels.
Even a tunnel crash of low severity causes much high crash severity outcomes, notably when multiple vehicles and trucks are involved and/or when a fire results from a crash.
Incident detection systems form part of the traffic incident management, generally consisting of detection, verification, and traffic/incident monitor/control devices installed inside tunnels.
In the event of a tunnel crash, tunnel relief systems enable rapid transportation of the crashed vehicle from the affected area to the second position.
Our tunnel relief device contains an arcuate frame member, at least two fire-extinguishing arms, and a transport architecture. The arcuate frame member traverses along the length of the tunnel by the first guide rails installed on the inner surface of the tunnel. The fire-extinguishing arms are positioned on an inner surface of the arcuate frame member and traverse along the inner surface of the arcuate frame member by second guide rails to extinguish the fire in the tunnel. The transport assembly includes extendable arms and is embedded in an upper region of the arcuate frame member. The extendable arms can be moved both horizontally and vertically. The transport assembly is rotatably interlocked to the upper region of the arcuate frame member to transport the vehicles in the tunnel from the first (affected) position to the second position to ensure safe and unobstructed movement of the vehicles in the tunnel.

Features & assemblies
• Tunnel status monitoring by image processing units
• Remotely operated fire-extinguishing arms with nozzles to control fire-causing crashes
• Adjustable prongs to transport the vehicle from the affected area
• Visual indicator equipped arcuate frame member to alert approaching vehicles and produce secure visual information
• Remotely operated extendable vehicle transport arms for ensured, safe, and unobstructed transportation
• Traffic congestion mitigation by rapid, safe, and systemic relief operations
• Crash analysis, risk assessment, and safety management

Our proposed device (patent no.: US 9,950,909 BI - 2018) is designed to address post-crash outcomes especially during peak hours, including traffic congestion, bottlenecks at weaving areas, explosion or fire, major traffic flow disruptions, long travel time delays, and elevated crash risk across the surrounding road network.
The device prevents the situation from worsening, allows road users not involved to avoid dangerous situations, and informs other road users to avoid the wrong action causing delayed emergency teams.
Our device creatively addresses the situation especially in uni-directional traffic and crash-prone tunnels. The device is well suited to respond to demands in megaprojects, raised traffic densities, and elevated demand for underground communication links, as well as transporting hazardous materials.
