LEADLESS CAR STARTING LITHIUM BATTERY,
[Category : - Automotive Accessories ]
[Viewed 654 times]
This invention uses combination of lithium cells and supercapacitors in car starting lithium batteries.
Growing demands for technical requirements as modern car manufacturers are introducing new systems (e.g. start-stop or advanced-start-stop) and are expanding the use of onboard electronics, systems and technologies, together with environmental requirements such as EU End-of-Life Vehicle Directive, are creating new demands for car starting batteries.
It is increasingly difficult for lead acid batteries and even some lithium batteries to meet all those requirements.
Kinitolo's (Olife battery technology) fulfills those requirements and is suitable for combustion engine, hybrid and electric vehicles, but it is especially suitable for start-stop technology and advanced start stop technology.
What is patented:
The subject of the patent is the connection of lithium cells with supercapacitors.
The technology disclosed provides the following advantages:
• It combines the high energy densities of batteries and the quick charge and discharge rates of supercapacitors.
• Batteries can store a lot of energy in a small and light package, but they can’t charge or discharge very quickly or last a long time the way supercapacitors can.
• It is 100% lead-free technology
• This technology is able to provide high currents. (in a specific product, the following currents have been reached. 1300 A 1s, 600 A 40 s, 200 A continuously. These values do not represent the technology limitations, they were achieved based on required technical specifications)
• Long life
• Lower weight than lead acid technology
• It is ideal for start-stop system, frequent start-stops do not represent a problem for this technology.
• The technology can operate in sub-zero temperatures.
Financial informationThe demand for automobiles is growing with occasional slowdowns such as during the covid crisis. USA being nr. 1 automotive market, followed by rapidly developing Asia, followed by Europe on a third place.
The Global Start-stop Battery Market is expected to grow by $ 7.85 bn during 2020-2024 progressing at a CAGR of 22% during the forecast period
Link
The start stop cars ratio is expected flip by 2025 to 80% from 20%.
Market opportunity & the best target market
The key driver for lithium starting battery will be emergence of so called "advanced start-stop" powertrains
Advanced start-stop enables a vehicle to more effectively handle its auxiliary electrical loads, and frequent re-starts.
In one embodiment, the vehicle would actually employ two batteries – one lithium-ion and one lead-acid – handling different tasks.
“It’s about reducing the load on the engine, and letting the engine be the traction of the vehicle, and not have to do the auxiliary support,”
The advanced start-stop scheme will become increasingly necessary as automakers add more electrically-based features, ranging from rear-window defrosters and heated steering wheels to electric water pumps and electric turbochargers.

EU ELV Directive bans lead as to be used in the EU. Lead currently as an excemption due to lack of alternative technologies. These already exist now, once they are ready for mass market the exemption will be released. The Annex II point 5a, which enables this exemption is under regular review.

Additional information:
• This technology is not just an idea on paper. Kinitolo's* daughter company Olife Corporation has developed a functional prototype which was tested for electric abuse conditions according to UN 38.3 and in the car on the road.
• It features an advanced BMS (developed by Olife) that is capable to manage combination of lithium cells and supercapacitors and communicates with Car's MCU via CANbus. The design has been done with regard to ISO 26262 ASIL D.
• Optionally this technology is also available for sale separately from patent for extra charge. The technology development has been financed by EU Horizon 2020
*Kinitolo is a legal successor of Ydun s.r.o. under which the patents were originally filed.
Kinitolo has this technology patented in EU, China, India, Euroasia
