I have a portfolio of patents covering “smart vents.” These are devices that are installed in some or all of the vents in a home with forced air heating or cooling and allow the temperature of each area to be controlled independently. This allows each room to be comfortable for the occupants and reduces energy wasted in unused areas.
Robert Herjavec of Shark Tank funded a company with this idea. That company and numerous others are almost certainly infringing my patents.
While I have no idea what current sales are, the potential market is immense. In the US alone there are over forty million homes that need smart vents. A typical smart vent system costs about one thousand dollars.
My patents date from 2010. There are earlier patents on the basic idea, but all of these missed the mark. While all of them adjust the conditioned air delivered by each vent, none of them properly handle the whole home, and most have other problems.
To properly handle the whole house, the system must make sure that the central system, furnace or air conditioner, provides exactly the same amount of energy as is lost from the home to the environment. It is not enough to only adjust the openness of vents in areas that are not at the desired temperature. The system must also adjust vents in areas that are at the desired temperature. Sometimes the right way to warm up a room is to close a little all of the vents not in that room.
There are an infinite number of vent settings that can deliver the desired temperatures. For example in a home that needed the same air delivery by each vent, all of the vents could be half open, or all of the vents could be completely open. But there is only one best solution. The best solution has the lowest possible pressure at the furnace (or A/C) fan. High pressure at that fan just wastes energy, not only in the fan but also increased loss from the inevitable leaks in the ducts. The best solution for vent settings has at least one vent all of the way open.
My patents claim the solution to these two problems. For each of the numerous products currently in the smart vent market there are two possibilities: they infringe my patents or they don’t work.
The portfolio includes similar patents in Canada (CA2748724A1) and several countries in Europe (WO2010078459A1). As of June 2021 there are 56 patent citations of the WIPO patents.
