DEVICE DESCRIPTION: Some of the products I believe are practicing the US Patent 7,583,819 are motion controllers, typically used in the gaming industry called game controllers. They are input devices that translate a stimulus detected by motion sensors incorporated in the device to a specific action, e.g. hitting the tennis ball in Nintendo’s “Wii Tennis” game, or, performing a heavy or light hit depending on whether the user moves the controller vigorously or smoothly, or, performing a forehand or a backhand hit depending on the way the user swings the controller.rnrnOPERATION: It is based on digital processing of signals. The signals are generated by motion sensors incorporated into the game controller. The signals are sampled, and the samples are processed by digital means, to recognize movements/gestures. A movement/gesture is recognized based on the relative valuesrnbetween the samples gathered over time. In specific, while a user performs a movement/gesture, the values of successive samples gathered over time are compared with each other and throughrntheir relation a movement/gesture is recognized. Moreover, a set of predefined movements/gestures - called patterns - is stored in a repository (memory), which form the “vocabulary”rnof available movements/gestures; each one is represented by values/thresholds/ranges of sensor data following a specific sequence, forming in this way a pattern. When a user performs a movement/gesture in real-time, the series of samples’ values detected are compared against the patterns in the “vocabulary”, and depending on the best match a movement/gesture is recognized.
