Method of current balancing between parallel LED branches
[Category : - ELECTRONICS- ELECTRICITY & LIGHTING]
[Viewed 1064 times]
Area: LED lighting
Problem: This problem has well-known name – ”LED current balancing”. When the arrays of LEDs are connected to the respective power supply units as several parallel branches, each of the series-connected LEDs, due to the variation of the parameters of the individual LEDs, the current is distributed unevenly between parallel branches, which leads to premature failure of the individual LEDs, and afterward to the whole device failure.
Key feature: Switch that produce extracurrent for current balancing is connected to LEDs in parallel, not in series. As switch is ON very low time it’s possible to use very cheap switch with poor performance characteristics, and as result used switch is very cheap. Proposed IC design is very simple and cost effective that use one low cost power switch, one comparator, and few one-way analog switches
Benefit: Proposed method and IC design allow producing extremely cheap chip. It in turn allow to build LED lighting system with current balancing which price is comparable to conventional LED lighting system without current balancing. It means “more reliability and longer life for the same cost”
