Concussion and Sub-concussion Monitor

The invention and patent describes a system and method capable of diagnosing the brain damage that results from sport-related concussion for the prevention of degenerative brain diseases such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

The brainstem region of the nervous system sustains the majority of the force that occurs during sport-related contacts to the head. The brainstem provides the location for the nerve cell bodies pertaining to the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Damage to brainstem tissue causes PNS dysfunction which can be detected by changes in heart rate variability (HRV). Modern wearable fitness devices that possess phototplethysmography (PPG) sensors for tracking HRV metrics are excellent devices for tracking HRV metrics to detect brainstem damage. Once strong baseline data is generated, changes to HRV that occur during contact sport participation can be determined. This system provides an objective method for concussion diagnosis.
The medical wearable device is a rapidly growing field. According to Grand View Research, " the global wearable medical device market size was valued at USD 10.3 billion in 2018 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 26.1% over the forecast period (2026)," and that the "growth of industries such as home healthcare and remote patient monitoring devices is anticipated to drive the growth.” And according to Research and Markets, " the wristband segment is the highest growing segment that is estimated to attain revenue of USD 36,479.23 Million in 2027 owing to the diverse range of features (anomaly detection, medical prediction and diagnosis) provided by wristbands that make them a popular choice among consumers.”
