APPARATUS FOR TREATING CONSTIPATION AND REMOVING FECALOMAS

Abstract
Introduction
Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders and, for several reasons ( diet, aging, sedentary lifestyle, etc.) is dramatically increasing in industrialized countries, ranging from 15% to 25% of population. In the United States alone, every year more than 3 million prescriptions are written and over $ 800 million is spent for over-the-counter (OTC) laxatives.
Physiopathology of constipation
In short words the colon is like a tube with an intrinsic movement (called peristalsis), going from proximal (oral) to distal part (rectal) , that pushes the intestinal content to anus up to its expulsion.
In constipation , the transit of intestinal content is slowed, the peristalsis is inhibited or decelerated and often the feces will become harder and form fecal impaction and/or fecalomas .
This condition may be clinically serious and responsible of intestinal occlusion and severe prognosis (see enclosed article) . The treatment of fecaloma is very complex and sometimes it is necessary to perform surgical removal with an high perioperative risk.
Old laxatives and this “new invention “
So far all the types of old laxatives work by
1) Stimulating colon contraction, i.e. peristalsis , but with the prolonged use the efficacy of this mechanism will be progressively reduced ;
2) Increasing the fecal mass ; these laxatives need, to work, of a valid peristalsis ;
3) By lubricating the wall of the colon ( these drugs do not facilitate fecal progression but only a more easy passage of the intestinal content through the colon and anus).
All these drugs (and also the rectal enemas) to be effective need that the intestinal musculature be able to contract and push forward the feces .
On the contrary, with my invention (Fig 1-3) we are able to push forward the hard feces and fecalomas to rectum and anus with a mechanical system.
The result is obtained with magnetic handlng of active elements, that fragment the fecalomas and drag the feces from the colon to anus . The active element (i.e. magnetic tablets or pills- Fig 2) may be inert or may release lubricating oil or other drugs that may help to soften the fecaloma and make it easier to be transported toward the anus.
The magnetic handler (Fig . 3) may be single (anterior 3A) o double (anterior and posterior 3B)
Actually this is the first and only device that do not need of spontaneous o induced (by drug) intestinal musculature function (i.e. peristalsis). .
Also it is a low cost procedure, repeatable, usable at bedside.
Moreover this invention is not exclusive for the human beings but it may be used also for other mammals that are used to have severe constipation (i.e. dogs, cats, horses).
