Biodiesel from Mustard Oil
[Category : - RENEWABLE ENERGY]
[Viewed 1265 times]
A process for obtaining bio-diesel from fatty acids obtained from Indian mustard oil with the help of an acid catalyst is described. which is eco-friendly, with minimum losses and low level of hazards during the process.
The process co-produces erucic acid, a C22:1 component of the fatty acids mixture in a very pure form as an additional bye-product besides glycerol. The biodiesel obtained from the process is very clean and pure and conforms to the BIS standards. The bye product, erucic acid together with glycerol renders the Bio-diesel production from this process highly techno-economically viable.
The waste mustard oil and the fraction of solvent extracted oil not fit for edible purposes can be put to use for producing biodiesel from this process.
