Vessel control system for automatic docking

A system for automatically docking a vessel 108 comprises at least one distance detector 106, at least one extendable arm 104 having attachment means 112 at one end and a control system 102 configured to activate the arm and the attachment means to link the vessel with a dockside 110 or another vessel. The system is activated when the distance detector, of which there may be several around the sides of the vessel, measures that the vessel is a preset distance from its docking point 114. The system may include means for storing chart data and may be able to select a location or suggested route from said data. The information taken from the chart data may be enhanced further by measuring wind speed, tide and current. The arm may be hydraulic and may be stored in a hold 107 within the vessel when not in use.
