The present invention provides an apparatus for plants, said apparatus that features a planter with a closed bottom, sidewalls, and an open top, wherein a protruding lip is defined on an exterior surface of the sidewalls in proximity to the open top; and a first cover with an open bottom, sidewalls, and a closed top, wherein a set of clasping mechanisms are located on two opposing sidewalls in proximity to the open bottom, and wherein the clasping mechanism reversibly attaches the cover to the lip of the planter. The invention further provides a second, insulating cover with an open bottom, sidewalls, and a closed top, wherein the second cover is received by the first cover after the first cover is reversibly attached to the planter.

The invention is a composite cover for planters and deck boxes that allows sunlight, air and water (mesh top with 1/4"x 1/4" squares) into the container, and at the same time
prohibits animals from eating the plants and seedlings inside. It can be made to whatever dimensions needed, but generally fits a deck box sized planter. It is at least 8" tall, but can be made higher to accommodate seedlings. The top has handles which lock down under the planter rim and provide an extremely strong grip, It is easy to apply, and easy to remove but cannot be dislodged by an animal.
In addition to the protective cap, the second part of the invention is an insulated cover which protects the plants from frost and inclement weather. The walls of the insulated cover are made of corrugated plastic or composite material which trap air and when the cover is locked down and provide a highly effective barrier against extreme cold. It has been tested and proven to protect plants from freezing when the outside temperature reached 26 degrees F. At that temperature no damage to the plants was witnessed, so it is fair to assume the cover may be effective to a much lower temperature.
The protective cap replaces expensive and ineffective animal urine which is used to keep small animals from raiding deck boxes and planters. It is unpleasant, and must be re-applied continuously as it is washed away by rain and normal watering. One protective cap will prevent animals from damaging plants indefinitely, and is absolutely effective while animal scents many times simply do not work. The price of the protective cap is essentially the same as a single container of predator urine.
The insulated cover can extend the growing season in both spring and fall. To my knowledge there is no other product like it anywhere. Rather than try to rig up a cover which will not work and is expensive and time consuming, the insulated cover could not be more effective and easy to use. Instead of hauling your deck boxes inside during a cold spell, simply place the light weight insulated cover over them and remove the next day.
