The present invention relates to a system for retrieving materials from a materials storage chamber, and to a method of retrieving materials from such a storage chamber. In particular, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to a system and method for retrieving hazardous materials, such as waste materials from nuclear reactors and materials contaminated by exposure to radiation, from a storage chamber. The method comprises cutting a slit in the concrete lid of the chamber and retrieving the material 112 using a grab 24 travelling on a beam 22 attached to an arm B. The material is removed from the chamber using a bucket 40 and an external conveyor 42.
