This invention is the most significant innovation in binoculars in more than 100 years. Previously, the magnifying power, that quantity which determines the size of the image, had been limited for any given system by the human eye. By uncoupling the image formed by the objective lens from the eye piece, as required in all conventional optical binoculars, the magnifying power is not dependent upon the human eye. Instead, by using the invention, the magnifying power is determined only by the limitations of the laws of physics of the objective lens. The resulting increase in magnifying power is a factor of two. Now, a 20 x binocular is only half a big as previously required, and fits within a pocket. And the invention allows for image stabilisation, recording, both in video and still photo mode. Improved night vision is another benefit. Also, by decoupling the eye lens from the objective lens, the size of the viewing pupil is increased to reduce sensitivity to eye position and eye fatigue. Digital zooming allows for increasing the angle of view when searching for an object of interest.
