Algorithm to Create Correct Dual Vertical Axes Chart

[Category : - SOFTWARES]
[Viewed 1402 times]

ABOUT THE PATENT

The key to present the correct information on a line chart is the setting of the scales of its vertical axis, including the lower limit, upper limit, and interval scale. For example, on a single vertical axis line chart, changing its lower limit and upper limit from “0” and “10” to “0” and “1,000” makes the displayed line become so flat as there has been no movement for such dataset and thus misleads the reader.

This scaling problem has been the reason that multiple axes chart cannot present the correct relation or comparison of multiple datasets and has been questioned for decades, while it has still been broadly used when people visualize datasets with different unit in their respective original unit, such as comparing “the unit sold and the average selling price“ or “stock traded in USD and in RMB”. The patented algorithm however, through defining and equalizing the elongation of every vertical axis on a multiple axes chart, solves the problem. With all the vertical axes at the same elongation, the chart can correctly show which dataset increase/varies more or less during the period.

The algorithm can be easily adopted on any chart creating software such as Excel, Bloomberg, or any Business Intelligence software

THE PROBLEM SOLVED BY OUR PATENT

People use dual vertical axes chart to see the relation or relative performances of two or even more datasets which are usually in different unit during a certain period of time. For example, “whether it is the number of units sold or the average selling price increased more since 2008?”. To see the true relation of the compared datasets, both vertical axes need to be set at the same elongation, which none of today’s software is able to, resulting that a line representing the dataset that in fact increased MORE during the period may be shown as it increased LESS than the other dataset and misleads the viewer of the chart.

HOW OUR PATENT SOLVES THE PROBLEM

As disclosed in our patent, the patented algorithm provides algorithm to define elongation and to generate the correct “4 corner numbers” of a dual vertical axes chart that need to be adopted to present the correct relation of the displayed lines. The algorithm is simple and easy to be adopted by any chart creating software.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

Dual vertical axes chart is commonly used in today’s data analysis and software, especially when comparing datasets with different units in their original unit. However, none of the software in the market has an algorithm that can set the elongation of the both vertical axes to be the same, which is decided by the 4 corner numbers on the two vertical axes of the chart, to make sure that the chart can correctly present the relation of the lines, thus the viewers are often misled. Nevertheless, our patented algorithm provides a solution for this and by incorporating our scaling algorithm, chart creating software will be able to further leverage the effects of visualization in the big data era.

Financial information

We focus on algorithm development and patent licensing. We have 5 patents which are related to algorithm for visualization of data and we are now seeking to license or sell.

Many of our patents or applications solve several algorithm problems that have been existed for 30 years in the field of chart creating, and we can see the commercialized value of them if combined with the suitable platform or software.
