The AutoErotic Safety Strap
[Category : - Life-saving; Fire-fighting]
[Viewed 3555 times]
With the death, about 5 years ago of David Carradine, the practice of auto-erotic asphyxia come into the spotlight like never before. I subsequently read in a number of places, that by some estimates, the number of yearly deaths attributable to this at around 1,000.
For the uninitiated, auto-erotic sex is the practice of cutting off the blood supply to the brain while masturbating like a little fiend. This increases the sensation of the orgasm. I'll have to take their word for it. They cut off the blood supply by hanging themselves with various things, cords, straps nooses that hook-up, usually to their bedroom or bathroom rods, clothes rods. The problem is, as in Carradine's case, when the participant goes too far and becomes unconscious and then dies.
It is obviously an inherently dangerous practice.
Since Carradine's death I saw one product that came on the market. It is a ligature (strap) that has a variable tension slipknot. It is essentially a knot tied in the strap that when pulled, releases the strap and the person will drop to the floor. This is only a half-measure at most. The person, to be able to release himself from the noose still has to be conscious. What if he's already beyond that?
It seems to me that the ligature strap should be rigged with a sort of "dead man's switch," that will automatically release without needing to actually pull anything to effectuate the release. The dead man's switch is what they have on subway cars, (as explained in the movie The Taking of Pelham 123). Once the conductor stops holding the device, it automatically stops. This is done to prevent subway accidents. The same basic principle could be used here.
So, let's say our subject is right-handed. He keeps his right hand free for obvious reasons, and places the Auto-Erotic Safety Strap over his head, begins hanging and holds it all together with his left hand. What is the mechanism? On the left side of the strap there is a break. On the end there is about a two inch long hollow metal tube and on the other end, a two inch long bolt.
So, think of it looking like one big long bolt (2 inches long) and one two inch long bolt. It's not screwed in however. There are no threads. So they are both smooth. If you place one inside the other and hold it there with your off hand it will form a very tight grip, as the weight (your weight) is being transferred and deferred by the tube and bolt. Now at any time if you release your hand grip the two parts fly apart and the weight is released. And should the person become unconscious, obviously, the hand comes off, the two pieces fly apart and the weight is released. So in this case even if you should become unconscious, the strap would break apart. My illustrations will clearly show this principle. And again, I really want to emphasize, no real strength is needed to hold the two pieces together. The tube and the bolt are doing the holding, your hand is just holding those
two parts together.
Now for the usual comments and disclaimers. I don't do this, I don't advocate it, to me it sounds absolutely nuts. However, there are many people that do it, regardless of what I think. Ergo, for the people who are going to do it anyway, why not use a product that is at least safe?

To my knowledge there are no similar products. I concluded this after doing a search at the USPTO.
